Universal Bounded Meta-Audit

A bilingual, bounded epistemic audit framework for AI-assisted thinking, verification, hardening and decision support.

Red Before Green

Challenge what can materially change the direction before preserving it.

Verification boundary

Same-model critique is a hypothesis, not external evidence.

Bounded by design

Stop when the expected value of more analysis no longer pays.

Method: token counts are computed deterministically on the included plain-text files. o200k_base and cl100k_base are encoding measurements, not a promise of exact API billing for every model. See sources [8]–[10].

02 Framework architecture

What ubmaMOS does

A decision-gate protocol that challenges the current direction, updates the state of knowledge, and identifies the highest-value next move without turning analysis into an end in itself.

  1. 0

    PHASE

Calibrate the audit to discovery, decision, build, verification, hardening or execution.

  2. 1

    RED

Find the strongest concrete condition that could materially change the direction.

  3. 2

    GAPS

Separate what is known, inferred, unverified, unknown, or plausibly overlooked.

  4. 3

    UPDATE

Identify what is newly learned and which prior assumptions it changes.

  5. 4

    CONSEQUENCE

Retain, revise, verify, test, drop, or stop.

  6. 5

    GREEN

Preserve only what still stands after the strongest material challenge.

  7. 6

    NEXT MOVE

Choose one question or action with the highest expected decision value.

RED BEFORE GREEN

Sequential, not cosmetic skepticism

The method delays preservation and optimization until a material disconfirmation attempt has been made. This prevents a balanced-looking pros/cons ritual from substituting for an actual challenge.

BOUNDEDNESS

Stop when marginal analysis no longer pays

The protocol compares the expected value of more information with analysis cost, delay and reversibility. A cheap informative test should beat another abstract review.

DECISION ORIENTATION

The audit must change the next move

A finding is material only when it can plausibly change the conclusion, quality, risk or next action. Otherwise it is omitted.

Context → interpretation → understanding → application

03 Epistemic logic & RED threshold

What counts as knowledge?

Labels are used only when the distinction could change the decision. UNKNOWN is a legitimate result; model confidence is not verification.

KNOWN

Directly known or verified in the current context. State the evidence when the claim is load-bearing.

INFERRED

A reasoned inference, not directly verified. It must not be presented as an observed fact.

UNVERIFIED

A claim or assumption that may be true but has not yet been checked with relevant evidence or a test.

UNKNOWN

Insufficient basis. The conclusion must either survive the unknown or be weakened or blocked.

RED: evidence threshold for a material finding

Report a RED finding only when all three are present:

  1. Plausible mechanism: a concrete way the problem could occur.
  2. Contextual anchoring: evidence, an observation or an identifiable assumption in the case at hand.
  3. Material consequence: the finding could realistically change the conclusion, quality, risk or next action.
01

No contrarian theatre

“Maybe it could …” without a mechanism and a consequence is not a RED finding.

02

No evidence transfer

Support for one component does not automatically validate the whole framework.

03

No forced completeness

If there is no material gap, the audit should say so and move on.

04 Verification · cost · runtime

When should the model think, and when should it test?

Same-model critique can identify a hypothesis or a checkpoint. It is not independent evidence. Use the shortest runtime layer that preserves the behaviour you need.

Model critique→hypothesis→external check when the claim is load-bearing

Escalate to a primary source, tool, calculation, measurement or executable test when a verifiable factual premise could change an important or hard-to-reverse decision.

Cost

Time + tokens + delay + harmful-revision risk

Which layer, when?

Cheap + reversible + informativeTest rather than analyse further.

Language choice: English uses fewer tokens in all three measured o200k_base pairs here, but performance and nuance depend on model, task and domain. Danish remains the source language for Minimal and Full; English is a portable operational candidate, not a universal winner. [8] [9] [10]

05 Distinctiveness & intellectual lineage

The framework's synthesis and intellectual roots

ubmaMOS names a specific architecture and publication system. Its underlying mechanisms come from older intellectual traditions and are not claimed as exclusive inventions.

Specific to ubmaMOS

  1. The name ubmaMOS / Universal Bounded Meta-Audit.
  2. The integrated sequence: PHASE → RED → GAPS → UPDATE → CONSEQUENCE → GREEN → NEXT BEST MOVE.
  3. Red Before Green as a governing sequence rather than a generic “be critical” instruction.
  4. Boundedness and Information Value vs. Action Cost as explicit stop logic.
  5. The separation between canonical specification, portable runtime and lightweight baseline.
  6. The episMOS framing: possibility → context → understanding → usable action.

Intellectual lineage

Falsification / disconfirmationChallenge claims with conditions that could make them fail.[1]
Cognitive debiasingConsider-the-opposite and counterevidence generation.[1]
Analytic tradecraftKey assumptions checks and devil’s advocacy.[2]
Rational metareasoningValue of computation and stopping.[3]
LLM reliabilityExternal feedback, sycophancy and instruction burden.[4–7]

Evidence boundary: the literature supports several components and failure mechanisms. It does not establish that the complete ubmaMOS protocol, as one integrated framework, has been independently validated across domains. That remains an empirical claim to test.

06 Applications · boundaries · hardening

Where it helps, and how it can fail

ubmaMOS is a decision and audit protocol, not an automatic truth system. Use it when structure can change the quality or the next action; skip the ritual when a cheap test already settles it.

  • Researchclaims · sources · uncertainty
  • Strategyassumptions · decision gates
  • Designdiscovery · selection · hardening
  • Code & QAreproduction · tests · stopping
  • Documentsprovenance · evidence status

Boundary: UBMA’s internal critique can suggest what should be verified. It does not replace external verification, domain expertise or executable ground truth where they are relevant.

Failure modes and controls

01

Same-model self-verification

Generator, critic and approver share framing and errors.

Control: Route load-bearing facts to external evidence or tests.

02

Sycophancy / personalization

Context can reveal the conclusion the user prefers.

Control: Preferences are constraints, not evidence.

03

False RED

The audit is rewarded for finding problems without a material mechanism.

Control: Mechanism + anchor + consequence.

04

Harmful revision

A correct answer is changed on the basis of plausible but false critique.

Control: Verify before flipping a correct load-bearing conclusion.

05

Instruction stacking

More scaffolding can reduce adherence and hide the core.

Control: Use the shortest runtime that preserves the behaviour.

06

Overanalysis / non-convergence

Each audit produces another “critical” layer without a better outcome.

Control: New material findings should fall toward zero.

The framework’s falsification rule: if a shorter baseline is non-inferior on decision quality and better on cost, harmful flips or convergence, the longer runtime layer is dominated and should be reduced.

07 Evidence map

Why the components are plausible, and what is not proven

The framework is a synthesis. Evidence status is assigned to mechanisms, not transferred wholesale to the complete ubmaMOS protocol.

ubmaMOS mechanismClosest evidence / theoryStatusWhat it supports, and does not support
RED / consider the oppositeLord, Lepper & Preston; cognitive debiasing [1]EMPIRICALSupports active counterevidence generation in specific human judgment tasks. Does not prove Full UBMA is optimal.
Load-bearing assumptionsCIA Key Assumptions Check / Devil’s Advocacy [2]TRADECRAFTSupports explicit assumption challenge as analytic practice. Institutional use is not the same as broad experimental validation.
Information Value vs. Action CostRational metareasoning / value of computation [3]THEORETICALSupports selecting computations by expected improvement and knowing when thought should give way to action.
External-verification boundaryLLM self-correction survey and negative results [4] [5]MIXED / DIRECTSupports caution about prompted self-correction without reliable external feedback. Effects are task-dependent.
Anti-pleasingLLM sycophancy research [6]EMPIRICAL LLMSupports the risk that preference optimization can favour agreement over truth. Does not mean every agreeable answer is sycophantic.
Anti-bloat / minimal runtimeInstruction-density benchmark [7]EMERGINGSupports instruction-adherence degradation under high density. The benchmark task differs from open-ended meta-audits.
Bilingual prompt optionsTokenizer disparity and multilingual reasoning studies [8] [9]TASK / MODEL DEPENDENTSupports measuring language choice rather than assuming parity. Does not establish English as universally better.

Current evidence claim: ubmaMOS is evidence-informed at the component level and explicitly designed around known failure modes. The integrated protocol still requires independent comparative evaluation against simpler baselines.
